Objectives

This course is designed for staff who will be exposed to the risks from use of abrasive wheels e.g in grinding machines.

The course meets the expectations of the Health & Safety Executive in terms of proper instruction of staff in the use of abrasive wheels in the workplace, HSG 17.

The course will enable the delegate to build the knowledge and skills necessary to:

1. Determine hazards and risks arising from the use of abrasive wheels and the precautions to be observed.

2. State methods of marking abrasive wheels with their type, size and maximum operating speed.

3. Demonstrate how to store handle and transport abrasive wheels.

4. Demonstrate how to inspect and test abrasive wheels for damage.

5. State the functions of all the components used with abrasive wheels such as flanges, blotters, bushes, nuts etc.

6. Demonstrate how to assemble abrasive wheels correctly to make sure they are properly balanced and fit to use.

7. Use the proper method of dressing an abrasive wheel (removing dulled abrasive or other material from the cutting surface and/or removing material to correct any uneven wear of the wheel).

8. Make the correct adjustment of the work rest on pedestal or bench grinding machines.

9. Use suitable personal protective equipment, for example eye protection.

Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course however delegates must demonstrate a mature demeanour.

Delegates will require workshop PPE, eye protection, overalls and safety boots.

ALSO NOTE THAT IN THE EVENT OF ANY DELEGATES NOT TURNING UP ON THE DAY, UNLESS WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED PRIOR TO THIS, YOU MAY BE CHARGED 30% OF THE COURSE FEES FOR COSTS INCURRED.

Notes

The course terminates with a short theory test and a practical assessment.

Successful delegates will be issued with a personalised certificate of industrial training in line with legislative requirements.
